Tesla Redesigns Door Handles Amid NHTSA Safety Probe
Tesla is overhauling its vehicle door handles following a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation into Model Y failures during emergencies. Chief designer Franz von Holzhausen confirmed the redesign integrates electronic and manual release mechanisms into a single button for panic situations.
The current system's reliance on electric signals has proven hazardous in power-loss scenarios, with at least four documented cases requiring window breaches for escape. NHTSA's probe now covers 174,000 Model Y units, including scrutiny of door lock power supplies.
